Fleet Director

JOB OVERVIEW:

The Fleet Director will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the company’s fleet operations, ensuring legal compliance, safety, cost efficiency and operational excellence across all locations.

He/she will be responsible for the procurement, compliance, maintenance, and disposal of all commercial vehicles, trailers, and company cars, while driving continuous improvement initiatives to support business growth, customer service excellence, and sustainability objectives.

This role requires a balance of hands-on operational oversight and high-level strategic leadership, working closely with senior management to align fleet performance with the company’s overall business goals.

We are offering a competitive salary of £80,000-£90,000 per annum plus car allowance.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Manage the efficiency and quality of our onsite VMUs.
  • Lead the overall strategy and management of the fleet department, ensuring 100% compliance with all regulatory, DVSA and O License requirements.
  • Lead the procurement function for all fleet service providers including fuel, tyres, parts etc. along with all eternal service providers.
  • Direct and oversee fleet maintenance, inspections, and compliance audits across all sites, ensuring minimum downtime and maximum cost efficiency.
  • Manage relationships with fleet suppliers, insurers, and compliance partners to maintain optimal service and contractual performance.
  • Ensure effective processes are in place for vehicle defect reporting, accident analysis, and trend monitoring to reduce risk and improve safety standards.
  • Oversee tachograph and driver compliance systems, ensuring EU Drivers’ Hours and WTD regulations are adhered to and properly managed.
  • Provide senior leadership in the use of vehicle tracking and telematics systems, driving improvements in driver performance, fuel efficiency, and environmental impact.
  • Lead the periodic auditing of sites against all O License criteria and close out corrective actions in a timely manner.
  • Develop, monitor and report on key fleet performance metrics, including MOT pass rates, downtime, accident statistics, and maintenance spend.
  • Oversee the administration and control of all fleet documentation including V5s, VTGs, RFLs, insurance, tolls and licensing systems (London Lorry Control, Dartford Crossing, Severn/Humber/Mersey Tunnels, ULEZ etc.).
  • Ensure robust systems are in place for driver license checks, hire/leased vehicle checks, and management of company cars.
  • Manage and provide leadership to the remote Driver Trainer team, ensuring driver compliance, fuel efficiency and performance standards are met.
  • Deliver accurate, timely reporting to the Managing Director and Board, highlighting compliance risks, cost-saving opportunities and fleet performance trends.
  • Drive innovation and best practice within the fleet function, including the adoption of new technologies and sustainable fleet solutions.

  • To adhere to relevant site rules, QEHS policies and procedures including quality procedures, HACCP, safe systems of work and environmental controls

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE

  • Proven track record in senior fleet leadership within logistics, transport or related industries.
  • 10+ years’ experience in managing large, multi-site commercial fleets.
  • Strong knowledge of DVSA, O License, EU Drivers’ Hours and WTD regulations.
  • CPC holder essential.
  • Excellent leadership, organisational and negotiation skills.
  • Strong analytical and IT capability, with experience of fleet management and telematics systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver cost savings and improve operational efficiency.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to work on own initiative.
  • Clean driving license.
  • Ability to bring together and lead a diverse team across multiple locations.
